Fifth New Music Summer Courses for Performers, Bydgoszcz, July 6-12, 2026

NEW MUSIC SUMMER COURSES FOR PERFORMERS, BYDGOSZCZ, JULY 6-12, 2026

This year, the courses will be held in the Ensemble Academy format. The ensemble program, under the direction of conductor Szymon Bywalec, will consist of two works:

• Here and There by Fozie Majd, a pioneer of new music in Iran, who, in a remarkably individual way, combines a thorough knowledge of new Western music with elements of her own musical culture.
• City Life by Steve Reich – a powerful energy sure to resonate with all who play and listen.

COURSE PROGRAM
• July 6th and 7th – work on Fozie Majd's "Here and There."
Performance: oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, piano, percussion, violin, viola, cello.
The result of this work will be presented on July 7th at a concert entitled "Outsiders," dedicated to female composers of the 20th and 21st centuries who created in opposition to dominant trends in music and culture, and sometimes even in defiance of other broader conditions.
• On July 8th, we begin work on Steve Reich's piece "City Life" – it will be performed on July 12th at a concert featuring the New Music Orchestra conducted by Szymon Bywalec. Instrumentation: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 pianos, 2 synthesizers/samplers, percussion (3 players), strings: at least 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass.
• Players who played oboe, clarinet, piano, percussion, violin, viola, and cello in the piece "Fozie Majd" may also participate in the performance of Steve Reich's piece. When applying, please indicate your intention to participate in both pieces or just one.
• The first concert will take place in the Chamber Hall, and the second in the Symphony Hall on the new campus of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz. Rehearsals for both concerts will take place on campus.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
• This year, participation in the course activities is free – participation is guaranteed by a signed contract signed by each participant. Student rooms are also available for use by course participants within the campus complex. Accommodation in the Student Dormitory costs PLN 90 per night for a single room and PLN 80 for a double room. • Applications are accepted until May 9th. This year, due to limited space, we reserve the right to select applicants based on the date of application and participation in previous Courses.
